DeepSeek, one of China’s fastest-rising AI startups, has launched its new V4 model as it seeks to take on leading American artificial intelligence companies. The release is being seen as another sign that China is rapidly closing the gap in AI development.
The company has introduced two versions — V4 Pro for complex tasks such as coding and research, and V4 Flash for faster, low-cost everyday use. This dual strategy allows DeepSeek to target both premium and mass-market users.
According to the company, V4 can handle extremely long documents and large datasets, making it useful for enterprises, programmers and analysts. It also says the model performs better in reasoning and technical tasks than previous versions.
The model has been optimised to run on Chinese-made Huawei chips, reducing reliance on foreign hardware. This is especially important as China faces tighter US restrictions on advanced semiconductor access.
DeepSeek became widely known after its earlier low-cost models challenged assumptions that only billion-dollar firms could build cutting-edge AI. With V4, it is now positioning itself as a global alternative to OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.
