Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the 2026 French Open due to a wrist injury, ending his attempt to win the tournament for a third consecutive year.
The Spanish star, who is one of the top-ranked players in men’s tennis, confirmed his decision after medical tests showed that the wrist problem required rest and careful recovery. The injury reportedly worsened during the clay-court season, forcing him to pull out of key warm-up events and eventually the Roland Garros Grand Slam.
Alcaraz, 22, had entered the season as a strong favourite on clay after winning back-to-back French Open titles in 2024 and 2025. His absence now leaves a major gap in the draw and opens the competition for other top players.
Reports suggest the injury first appeared during the Barcelona Open and continued to trouble him through subsequent matches. Despite treatment and attempts to manage the issue, medical advice ultimately ruled him out of further participation in the clay swing, including other major tournaments leading up to Paris.
The decision is also seen as a precaution to avoid aggravating the injury ahead of the rest of the tennis season. Alcaraz is expected to focus on recovery with hopes of returning for the grass-court swing later in the year, including Wimbledon.
His withdrawal is a significant moment for men’s tennis, as he had been chasing a rare French Open three-peat. Rivals in the draw now have a clearer path in his absence, while fans will have to wait longer to see him defend his dominance on clay.
Alcaraz has said he is disappointed but prioritises long-term fitness over short-term competition, signalling a cautious approach to his comeback.
