Myanmar moves Aung San Suu Kyi to house arrest

Former leader shifted from prison amid amnesty measures by military authorities

Myanmar’s former state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from prison to house arrest, according to state media reports, in a decision announced by the country’s military authorities.

The move comes more than five years after she was detained following the 2021 military coup that removed her elected government from power. Since then, she has remained in custody while facing multiple charges, which her supporters say are politically motivated.

State media said the remaining portion of her sentence will now be served at a designated residence instead of prison. However, officials have not revealed her exact location or provided details about her living conditions under house arrest.

The decision is being linked to a broader amnesty and sentence reduction programme announced by the military government. In recent weeks, authorities have reduced sentences for several political prisoners as part of what they described as humanitarian and administrative measures.

Suu Kyi, 80, has spent much of the past few years in detention and has rarely been seen in public since the coup. Her legal situation has also changed repeatedly, with reports of sentence reductions and adjustments over time.

Her supporters and international rights groups have consistently called for her release, arguing that the charges against her are unfair and part of the military’s efforts to maintain control after taking power.

The latest move has been described as a partial easing of her detention, but it does not indicate a full release. It also comes amid continued political instability in Myanmar, where the military government remains in control and opposition activity continues.
