TVK vs DMK–AIADMK in hung TN verdict

TVK leads, DMK and AIADMK explore post-poll options as numbers fall short of majority

Tamil Nadu has thrown up a fractured verdict, resulting in a hung assembly and a politically uncertain scenario. Actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party, but without a clear majority to form the government on its own.

TVK has won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the 118-seat majority mark. Despite the setback, the party has moved quickly to stake its claim, reaching out to smaller parties and allies to secure support for government formation. Congress, which won 5 seats, has extended support to TVK, improving its numbers but still leaving it below the required majority.

The post-election arithmetic has pushed rival parties into strategic discussions. The DMK, with 59 seats, and the AIADMK, with 47 seats, are reportedly exploring possible arrangements in an effort to prevent TVK from forming the government. While both parties have historically been strong rivals in Tamil Nadu politics, the fractured mandate has opened the door to unusual political calculations.

Sources suggest that informal discussions are underway on various post-poll scenarios, including support-based arrangements or conditional cooperation. However, no formal alliance has been announced, and political positions remain fluid.

The situation has created a high-stakes negotiation phase, with all major players attempting to secure a favourable outcome. TVK is banking on its position as the largest party, while the DMK and AIADMK are weighing options to maintain influence in the next government formation process.

The Governor’s role is expected to be crucial in the coming days as claims for forming the government are submitted. With no clear majority, the decision on inviting a party or alliance to form the government will depend on demonstrated support in the House.
