Bengal Assembly dissolved after TMC defeat

Governor R.N. Ravi dissolves Assembly after Mamata refuses resignation. BJP prepares government.

West Bengal witnessed dramatic political developments after Governor R.N. Ravi dissolved the state Assembly following the Trinamool Congress’s defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections. The move came after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to resign despite her party losing power, triggering a constitutional and political confrontation in the state.

The Governor issued an official notification dissolving the Assembly with effect from May 7, clearing the path for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form the next government in West Bengal for the first time. The BJP secured a decisive victory in the elections, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state.

Mamata Banerjee maintained that the election mandate had been “stolen” and indicated that her party would challenge the results legally. Her refusal to step down led to heightened political tension, with attention turning to Raj Bhavan for the next constitutional step.

With the Assembly dissolved, the outgoing government will function only in a caretaker role until a new administration takes charge. Political focus has now shifted to the BJP leadership, with discussions underway on selecting the next chief minister and finalising the cabinet. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to play a key role in the decision-making process.

Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony have reportedly begun, although the BJP has not yet officially announced its chief ministerial candidate. Several senior party leaders have held meetings in Kolkata and Delhi as the transition process gathers pace.

Meanwhile, visible signs of political change have emerged across Kolkata. Security arrangements outside Mamata Banerjee’s residence were reduced following the election results, and reports suggest some officials associated with the outgoing administration have stepped down from advisory positions.

The election outcome marks one of the biggest political shifts in West Bengal in decades. The BJP’s victory is being seen as a major breakthrough for the party in eastern India, while the TMC now faces the challenge of rebuilding after its first Assembly defeat since coming to power in 2011.
