Trump pauses Hormuz plan after Gulf ally pushback

Saudi Arabia reportedly denied US access to bases and airspace for operation

US President Donald Trump has reportedly put on hold a major military plan aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz after facing resistance from key Gulf allies, particularly Saudi Arabia.

The proposed operation, known as “Project Freedom,” was intended to protect commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. The plan came amid rising tensions in the region following attacks on vessels and growing confrontation involving Iran.

However, reports suggest Saudi Arabia refused to allow the US to use its military bases and airspace for the operation. Gulf nations were reportedly concerned that direct military action could further escalate tensions and trigger a broader conflict in the Middle East.

According to reports, the Trump administration had moved ahead with the announcement before fully securing support from regional allies. The disagreement reportedly became clear after discussions between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman failed to produce a breakthrough.

Following the pushback, the White House decided to temporarily pause the operation while exploring diplomatic options and regional consultations. US officials, however, have indicated that military monitoring and naval presence in the Gulf will continue.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important waterways in the world, with a significant share of global oil exports passing through it daily. Any disruption in the region has immediate implications for global energy markets and oil prices.
