The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General (Retd.) N S Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will replace General Anil Chauhan when he completes his tenure on May 30, 2026.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Defence on May 9, 2026. After taking charge, Lt Gen Subramani will also serve as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, which works to improve coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The Chief of Defence Staff is the top military post in India. The CDS acts as the principal military adviser to the government and plays a key role in bringing better coordination between the three armed forces. The position was created in 2020 as part of defence reforms to strengthen joint operations and improve overall efficiency.
Lt Gen Subramani has served in the Indian Army for over three decades. During his career, he has held several important command and staff roles. He has also served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff and has led major operational responsibilities. In recent years, he has been involved in strategic planning and defence management roles.
General Anil Chauhan, the outgoing CDS, has been in office since 2022. Under his leadership, efforts focused on improving jointness among the services, modernisation, and enhancing operational readiness.
The government said the appointment ensures continuity in ongoing defence reforms while bringing experienced leadership at the top level. The change comes at a time when India is focusing on stronger integration between its armed forces and improved defence preparedness.
