Trump, Xi hold high-stakes talks In Beijing

Trade, Taiwan and Iran dominate crucial US-China talks

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing on Thursday for a high-stakes summit as both countries attempt to manage growing tensions over trade, security and global conflicts.

The meeting took place at the Great Hall of the People, where Xi welcomed Trump with a formal state reception. The visit marks Trump’s first trip to China since returning to the White House and comes at a sensitive time in relations between the world’s two largest economies.

Although both leaders appeared friendly in public, the discussions focused on several difficult issues, including Taiwan, trade disputes, artificial intelligence and the ongoing Iran conflict.

During the talks, Xi reportedly warned that the Taiwan issue could become dangerous if not handled carefully. China considers Taiwan part of its territory, while the United States has continued its support for Taiwan’s defence and democratic system. The issue remains one of the biggest flashpoints between Washington and Beijing.

Trade was another major topic during the summit. Relations between the two countries have been strained by tariffs, technology restrictions and disagreements over supply chains. Ahead of the meeting, China renewed export licences for hundreds of American beef suppliers, a move seen as an attempt to create a more positive atmosphere before negotiations.

Trump described the discussions as productive and praised Xi during the meeting. Xi, in turn, said China and the United States should work together instead of treating each other as rivals. Both sides stressed the importance of stable relations, even as major disagreements remain unresolved.

Several top American business leaders accompanied Trump during the visit, highlighting the importance of economic ties between the two nations despite political tensions.

The summit also included discussions on the Iran conflict and wider global security concerns. With tensions rising in several regions, both countries are under pressure to avoid further confrontation and maintain economic stability.
