Over 54 dead as severe storm batters UP

A fast-moving pre-monsoon storm with heavy rain and violent winds hits several districts of UP

A sudden and powerful storm swept across parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction and at least 60+ people dead across multiple districts.

The storm, which brought intense rain, dust, and extremely strong winds, struck without much warning and quickly escalated into a dangerous weather event. Districts including Prayagraj, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Fatehpur, and Budaun were among the worst affected.

In Prayagraj alone, several deaths were reported as homes collapsed and trees fell during the storm. Bhadohi and Mirzapur also saw significant casualties, while other districts like Fatehpur, Kaushambi, Kanpur Dehat, and Hardoi reported additional deaths and injuries. Many of those who died were inside their homes when walls or roofs gave way under the force of the winds.

Across villages and towns, scenes of chaos followed the storm’s arrival. Trees were uprooted, electricity poles snapped, and rooftops were blown off in minutes. In some areas, the dust and wind were so intense that visibility dropped sharply, making it difficult for people to move around safely.

Rescue teams and local authorities have been working through the affected regions, clearing blocked roads, helping injured residents, and restoring power supply. However, communication issues in certain rural pockets have slowed down relief efforts.

Officials say the situation is still being assessed, and the death toll may rise as reports continue to come in from remote and hard-to-reach areas.

The storm is being described as one of the most destructive pre-monsoon weather events in the region in recent years, exposing how vulnerable many rural homes are to extreme weather conditions.
