US approves defence support deal for India

Apache helicopters and M777 howitzers to receive long-term support services

India is set to receive a significant defence support boost after the United States approved possible support service agreements for Apache helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers currently used by the Indian armed forces.

The proposed agreements are worth more than $428 million and are focused on ensuring that the defence systems remain operational over the long term. The package does not involve the purchase of additional weapons or equipment. Instead, it centres on support services such as repairs, training, technical assistance, spare parts and logistics.

Military experts say such support arrangements are essential because advanced defence systems require regular maintenance and upgrades. Proper servicing helps improve reliability and ensures that equipment remains ready for deployment whenever needed.

Apache helicopters are considered a crucial part of India’s air combat strength and are used in various operational roles. M777A2 howitzers also hold strategic importance, especially in high-altitude regions where mobility and quick deployment are essential.

The latest approval also reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and the US. Defence ties between the two countries have strengthened considerably over the years, with both sides increasing cooperation in military technology, security and joint initiatives.

Officials believe these agreements will help improve India’s military preparedness while supporting broader efforts aimed at regional stability and security.
