Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have met in Beijing, reaffirming their close strategic partnership and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including energy, technology, and trade.
The talks highlighted what both leaders described as a “comprehensive strategic partnership” that continues to grow despite global geopolitical tensions. Xi and Putin used the meeting to present a united stance on several international issues, including criticism of Western policies and calls for a more multipolar world order.
Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, energy security, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange. Reports suggest that a large number of agreements were discussed, aimed at strengthening economic and political ties between the two countries.
Energy cooperation remained a key focus of the discussions, particularly long-term oil and gas supply arrangements from Russia to China. However, one of the most important pending projects—the “Power of Siberia 2” gas pipeline—did not see a final breakthrough during the talks. Differences over pricing and contractual terms are believed to be the main sticking points.
Despite the lack of agreement on this major project, both leaders publicly emphasised strong bilateral relations. Xi Jinping described the partnership as a stabilising force in global affairs, while Vladimir Putin said ties between Russia and China are at an “unprecedented level” and continue to expand across strategic areas.
The meeting also came shortly after Xi’s interaction with US President Donald Trump, underlining China’s active diplomatic engagement with major global powers. Analysts say Beijing is carefully balancing relations with both Washington and Moscow amid shifting global alliances.
During the visit, the two leaders also engaged in symbolic diplomatic events, including formal ceremonies and cultural exchanges aimed at reinforcing friendship and mutual trust. These gestures were seen as part of broader efforts to project unity on the global stage.
