Iran reportedly destroyed $1 bn worth of US drones

MQ-9 Reaper drones have been downed since the start of the ongoing conflict

Iran has reportedly shot down or destroyed more than $1 billion worth of US MQ-9 Reaper drones since the conflict began, according to media reports based on defence assessments. The losses are being seen as a major setback for US surveillance and reconnaissance operations in the region.

The MQ-9 Reaper is one of the US military’s key unmanned aircraft systems, used for intelligence gathering, monitoring, and precision strikes. Reports suggest that around two dozen drones may have been lost or disabled during operations in contested airspace.

These drones play an important role in tracking movements and supporting military decisions in real time. Their repeated loss is expected to reduce the US military’s ability to maintain continuous surveillance in high-tension zones.

According to reports, Iranian forces have managed to bring down the drones using a mix of air defence systems and electronic warfare techniques. However, neither side has provided full official confirmation on the total number of drones destroyed.

The reported losses highlight how intense the conflict has become, with both sides increasingly relying on advanced technology in their operations. Experts say the targeting of high-value drones shows a shift toward more sophisticated and technology-focused warfare.

US officials have not confirmed the total damage but have acknowledged ongoing risks to aircraft operating in the region. The situation remains tense, with both sides continuing military activity.
