Bandra east demolition nears completion

18 held after violence during Mumbai civic demolition operation

The demolition drive in Bandra East, Mumbai, has reached around 85% completion, even as tensions escalated in parts of the area with incidents of stone-pelting and protests during the operation.

The civic action is being carried out against alleged unauthorised structures as part of an ongoing municipal enforcement drive. Officials said most of the targeted constructions have already been removed, and the operation is now in its final stage.

However, the situation turned tense when some residents opposed the demolition, leading to clashes with police. Reports of stone-pelting emerged during the drive, prompting authorities to deploy additional security forces to control the situation and continue the operation.

Police said 18 people have been arrested in connection with the violence. Cases have been registered for rioting, obstruction of public servants, and damage to public property.

Some residents have also approached the court, challenging the demolition notices and seeking relief. The matter is currently under legal review, even as the civic body continues its action on the ground.

Officials maintained that the drive is being conducted in accordance with legal procedures and court directives. They added that enforcement action is necessary to remove illegal constructions and ensure compliance with urban planning regulations.

Despite the protests, demolition work has continued in phases under heavy police protection. Barricades have been placed in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation and maintain order.

The incident has once again highlighted the recurring conflict between civic authorities and residents in Mumbai over unauthorised constructions, a long-standing urban issue in several parts of the city.
