YouTube introduces AI video labels

Platform aims to tackle deepfakes and improve transparency around synthetic content

YouTube has announced a major update to its AI-content policy by introducing automatic detection and labelling of AI-generated videos on its platform. The feature is designed to identify realistic synthetic content even when creators fail to disclose the use of artificial intelligence tools.

The company said the new system will focus mainly on videos that could potentially mislead viewers. This includes deepfake-style content, altered speeches, AI-generated voices and realistic visuals involving public figures, news events or sensitive topics.

Earlier, YouTube depended on creators to voluntarily reveal whether AI was used in making their videos. However, with the rapid growth of generative AI tools, the platform said automated detection has become necessary to maintain trust and transparency for viewers.

According to YouTube, labels will appear on videos containing realistic AI-generated or manipulated content. However, routine editing features such as filters, colour correction, background cleanup or minor AI-assisted enhancements will not trigger labels.

The company said the move is part of broader efforts to prevent misinformation and reduce confusion around synthetic media online. Concerns about deepfakes and digitally altered videos have increased globally, especially around politics, celebrities and breaking news.

YouTube has not publicly disclosed the technical details behind its detection system but confirmed that machine learning tools will be used to identify AI-generated elements within videos.

The rollout of the feature will happen gradually over the coming months.
