Siddaramaiah steps down as Karnataka CM

Leadership change as Congress prepares smooth transition of power under DK Shivakumar

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has resigned from his post, marking a major political shift in the state and ending months of speculation over a leadership change within the ruling Congress government.

According to reports, Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to the Governor after a series of high-level discussions within the party. The move comes following meetings with senior Congress leaders, including the party’s central leadership, and a key breakfast meeting with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and cabinet colleagues.

The resignation has effectively cleared the path for DK Shivakumar to take over as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. Party sources and multiple reports indicate that the Congress high command has backed Shivakumar for the top post as part of an internal leadership transition plan.

The development follows prolonged discussions over power-sharing arrangements within the state unit of the Congress. In recent days, political activity intensified in Bengaluru and Delhi, with senior leaders holding multiple rounds of consultations to finalise the transition.

Before submitting his resignation, Siddaramaiah reportedly attended a breakfast meeting at his official residence, which included ministers and senior party leaders. The meeting was seen as a final step in the transition process, with signals of a coordinated and relatively smooth handover of power.

Supporters of DK Shivakumar were seen celebrating in parts of Karnataka as speculation about his elevation gained momentum. Party leaders said the decision was taken in line with directions from the Congress high command to ensure unity and stability within the government.

Siddaramaiah, one of Karnataka’s most experienced political leaders, has previously served multiple terms as Chief Minister. His resignation marks the end of a significant phase in the state’s governance, especially under the current Congress administration formed after the 2023 assembly elections.

DK Shivakumar, who has served as Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president, is now expected to formally take charge after completing procedural formalities with the Governor.
