Film producer Pahlaj Nihalani passes away at 76

Former CBFC chief and veteran producer leaves behind a lasting legacy

Veteran film producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman Pahlaj Nihalani passed away in Mumbai at the age of 76. His death marks the end of a decades-long career in the Indian film industry, where he was known both as a successful producer and a prominent figure in film certification.

Nihalani began his journey in Bollywood as a film producer and was associated with several popular Hindi films. Over the years, he produced numerous commercial successes and worked with some of the industry’s biggest actors and filmmakers. His contributions helped shape mainstream Hindi cinema during the 1980s and 1990s.

Apart from film production, Nihalani gained national attention when he served as chairman of the CBFC between 2015 and 2017. During his tenure, he was often in the spotlight for decisions related to film certification and censorship. His strict approach toward movie content sparked debates within the film industry and among audiences, making him one of the most discussed CBFC chiefs in recent years.

Despite controversies surrounding some of his decisions, Nihalani remained a significant figure in Indian cinema. Supporters viewed him as someone committed to regulatory standards, while critics argued that some certification decisions were overly restrictive. His tenure contributed to wider discussions about creative freedom and film regulation in India.

Following news of his death, members of the film fraternity expressed condolences and paid tribute to his contributions to the entertainment industry. Industry colleagues remembered him as a passionate producer who remained actively involved in cinema throughout his life.
