Protest erupts at Imphal hospital over Kuki patients

Security tightened after protests over treatment of three Kuki youths injured in an armed attack

Fresh tensions surfaced in Manipur after protests broke out over the treatment of three injured Kuki youths at a hospital in Imphal, prompting authorities to deploy additional security personnel and closely monitor the situation.

The three youths were reportedly injured in an armed attack in a hill district and were later brought to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for specialised treatment. Their arrival at the hospital triggered protests by a group of demonstrators who objected to the victims being treated in the state capital.

According to officials, a crowd gathered outside the hospital premises, raising slogans and demanding that the injured men be shifted elsewhere. The situation remained tense for several hours as security forces worked to prevent any escalation and ensure the safety of patients, medical staff and the injured youths.

Authorities said the injured individuals required urgent medical attention and were admitted following established medical protocols. Hospital officials maintained that treatment was provided solely on humanitarian grounds and in accordance with healthcare norms.

Security personnel were deployed in and around the hospital complex to prevent any untoward incident. Officials said the situation was eventually brought under control, though tensions remained high.

The National Human Rights Commission and civil society groups have repeatedly stressed the need to ensure access to medical care for all citizens regardless of community affiliation. Healthcare services should remain neutral and accessible, they have said.

Authorities have appealed for calm and urged residents not to spread rumours or inflammatory content on social media. They reiterated that maintaining peace and ensuring medical treatment for those in need remain top priorities.
