Odisha is gearing up for a spell of heavy rainfall as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal intensifies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that this system will strengthen into a depression by October 2 and is likely to make landfall along the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coast on October 3.
From October 1 to 3, many parts of Odisha will experience light to moderate rain accompanied by isolated heavy showers, with very heavy rains expected on October 2 in southern districts like Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Kandhamal, and Gajapati.
Thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 50 kmph are predicted, and squally winds reaching 55 kmph along the coast have prompted an advisory for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea from October 1 to 4 due to rough conditions.
In response to the heavy rain alert, authorities have placed 25 districts on alert, canceling government employees’ leaves in the most affected areas and preparing emergency teams and machinery to deal with possible flooding, landslides, and waterlogging.
This forecast highlights a crucial time for Odisha as the state braces for sustained heavy rainfall that could impact daily life and safety, especially during the ongoing festive season.
