amil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay delivered one of his most combative speeches in the State Assembly on Tuesday, using the floor of the House to defend his government’s record, recount the rise of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and launch a sharp attack on the opposition DMK. The heated exchange eventually led to a walkout by DMK legislators.
Speaking during the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, Vijay rejected claims that TVK was merely an “actor’s party” that had unexpectedly come to power. Instead, he traced the party’s political journey, highlighting years of grassroots work, public outreach and activism that, he said, paved the way for its electoral success.
The Chief Minister also defended his administration against allegations relating to law and order, corruption and governance. Vijay accused previous governments of fostering corruption and vowed that his administration would pursue all cases of wrongdoing without fear or favour.
A major flashpoint came when Vijay took aim at the DMK leadership and mocked a popular hand gesture associated with former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The move sparked loud protests from opposition benches, with DMK members accusing the Chief Minister of lowering the dignity of the Assembly. The confrontation soon escalated, prompting DMK legislators to stage a walkout.
Vijay also used the speech to counter criticism surrounding the recent national anthem controversy, citing past Assembly events and traditions to defend the government’s position. He argued that the opposition was attempting to create unnecessary political controversy around the issue.
The address marked Vijay’s most extensive Assembly speech since becoming Chief Minister and reflected his growing confidence as a political leader. For supporters, it showcased a leader willing to take on opponents directly. Critics, however, viewed it as an unnecessarily confrontational performance.
