Croatia revive World Cup hopes with narrow Panama win

Budimir goal keeps qualification dream alive, ends Panama campaign

Croatia breathed new life into their FIFA World Cup campaign with a gritty 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, securing three crucial points and keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage firmly alive.

Entering the match under intense pressure after losing their opening group game, Croatia knew a defeat could effectively end their World Cup journey. Panama faced a similar situation, making the encounter a virtual do-or-die contest for both teams.

The first half was closely fought, with neither side able to create many clear-cut chances. Croatia enjoyed more possession and looked the more composed team in midfield, but Panama remained disciplined at the back and frustrated their European opponents. As the teams headed into the break goalless, the tension around the stadium continued to build.

The breakthrough finally arrived nine minutes into the second half. Croatia’s Ante Budimir, introduced as a substitute, made an immediate impact by heading home a well-delivered cross from Josip Stanisic in the 54th minute. The goal sparked celebrations among Croatian supporters and shifted the momentum firmly in their team’s favour.

Panama responded positively and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The Central American side created several promising opportunities and tested Croatia’s defence on multiple occasions. However, goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic proved to be the difference-maker, producing a series of important saves to deny Panama and preserve Croatia’s slender advantage.

The victory carried added significance for Croatia captain Luka Modric, who made his 200th appearance for the national team. The veteran midfielder once again demonstrated his leadership and experience, helping guide his side through a tense contest when the stakes were highest.

For Panama, the defeat was a heartbreaking outcome. Despite showing determination and fighting spirit throughout the match, they failed to convert their chances and became the first team from Group L to be eliminated from the tournament.

The result leaves Croatia with three points and a realistic chance of advancing to the knockout rounds. Their qualification hopes will now depend on the outcome of their final group-stage fixture, where another positive result could secure a place in the next phase.

As the tournament enters a decisive stage, Croatia have given themselves a lifeline, while Panama’s World Cup adventure comes to an end despite a brave effort on football’s biggest stage.
