Netflix has started rolling out a new feature that requires users to link a unique email address to every profile created under a shared subscription. The update is part of the company’s continuing efforts to improve account security and make profile ownership more transparent.
Previously, multiple profiles could be created under a single Netflix account without separate email addresses. Under the new system, users will gradually be asked to assign an individual email ID to each profile. The rollout is expected to happen in phases, meaning not all subscribers will see the change immediately.
According to Netflix, the update is designed to give users better control over their personal profiles. Each profile will continue to retain its viewing history, watchlist and personalised recommendations, while the linked email address will make account recovery, verification and profile transfers easier.
The change will not affect families or households that are eligible to share a subscription. They can continue using multiple profiles as before, but each profile holder will eventually need to provide a unique email address when prompted. Those who fail to complete the process could face restrictions when accessing or managing their profiles.
The latest move comes after Netflix introduced several measures to reduce password sharing outside a subscriber’s household. The company has already rolled out paid account-sharing options in many markets and has increased verification checks to ensure accounts comply with its subscription rules.
For most subscribers, the update is expected to be a minor change rather than a disruption. Users will simply need to link an email address to their profile while continuing to enjoy the same content and personalised experience.
As streaming platforms compete to retain subscribers, Netflix is increasingly focusing on balancing convenience with stronger account protection. The new requirement reflects that strategy while giving users greater control over their individual profiles.
