India to represent at Khamenei funeral

MoS Pabitra Margherita, Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to attend funeral

India will be represented by a ministerial delegation at the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, signalling New Delhi’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic ties with Tehran while carefully balancing its broader foreign policy priorities.

The delegation will be led by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita. Bihar Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain is also expected to be part of the Indian team attending the state funeral in Iran.

Iran had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the ceremony. However, the Centre decided to send a lower-level delegation instead, a move that diplomatic observers describe as a measured response amid the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia.

Officials say the delegation will convey India’s condolences to the Iranian leadership and people. The visit reflects the long-standing relationship between the two countries, which have cooperated in areas such as energy, trade, connectivity and regional security.

India and Iran have maintained close diplomatic engagement despite changing global equations. Tehran has remained an important partner for New Delhi, particularly in projects linked to regional connectivity and strategic cooperation.

Foreign policy experts believe the composition of the delegation reflects India’s effort to strike a balance between its ties with Iran and its relationships with other countries in the region. Sending a minister instead of the Prime Minister allows India to pay its respects while maintaining diplomatic flexibility.

The funeral is expected to be attended by senior leaders and representatives from several countries, making it a significant international event. Iranian authorities have put extensive security arrangements in place ahead of the ceremonies.
