The annual Amarnath Yatra began on a positive note on Friday, with more than 12,000 devotees offering prayers at the holy cave shrine on the opening day of the pilgrimage. Pilgrims from different parts of the country trekked through the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva amid tight security arrangements and favourable weather conditions.
Officials said the first day of the yatra was smooth, with devotees completing the journey in an orderly manner. Security forces, medical teams and volunteers were deployed along both routes to ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims. Facilities such as healthcare, accommodation, food and transport have been strengthened to support the large number of visitors expected during the pilgrimage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to the devotees and wished them a safe and spiritually fulfilling journey. He urged pilgrims to maintain cleanliness throughout the yatra, follow all safety guidelines and support local communities by purchasing locally made products. Stressing the importance of responsible travel, he encouraged everyone to contribute to preserving the region’s natural beauty while promoting the spirit of ‘Vocal for Local’.
The pilgrimage is one of the most significant religious events in the country and attracts thousands of devotees every year. Pilgrims undertake the challenging trek to the Himalayan cave shrine, where a naturally formed ice Shivling is revered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva.
Authorities have made elaborate arrangements for this year’s yatra, including enhanced surveillance, emergency response systems and improved civic amenities along the routes. Pilgrims have also been advised to follow weather updates, travel in designated groups and cooperate with officials to ensure a safe pilgrimage.
The successful start to the yatra has raised hopes for a peaceful and well-organised pilgrimage season. As more devotees continue to arrive in Jammu and Kashmir over the coming weeks, officials remain focused on ensuring a smooth experience while safeguarding the fragile Himalayan environment. The Amarnath Yatra is scheduled to continue until Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan), drawing lakhs of devotees from across the country.
