The Centre has directed Meta to remove advertisements on Instagram linked to child sexual abuse material after media reports exposed their presence on the platform.
The government has asked the company to explain how such advertisements were approved and has instructed it to tighten its content moderation systems. Officials warned that online platforms must ensure their services are not misused to promote illegal content.
The advertisements reportedly promoted AI-generated child abuse images and directed users to external platforms. The revelations have sparked fresh concerns over the safety of children online and the growing misuse of digital advertising tools.
Meta said it does not allow content that exploits children and is taking action to remove the advertisements. The company added that it uses automated tools, human reviewers and user reports to detect and remove such content.
The case is likely to lead to closer scrutiny of how social media companies monitor advertisements and enforce child safety rules, with the government making it clear that online platforms will be held accountable for failing to curb illegal content.
