Trump revives Turkey F-35 talks

US weighs sanctions relief and fighter jet sale

Donald Trump signalled a possible easing of US restrictions on Turkey during the NATO summit, saying Washington could reconsider selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey if ongoing discussions progress positively. The remarks mark a potential shift in US-Turkey defence ties after years of strained relations.

Trump also announced plans to lift certain sanctions imposed on Turkey, saying both countries were working to strengthen strategic cooperation. The move follows renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Ankara on defence and regional security issues.

The US had removed Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet programme after Ankara acquired the Russian-made S-400 missile defence system, citing security concerns. Trump’s latest comments suggest that both sides are exploring ways to rebuild military cooperation, although no formal agreement has been announced.
