The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been ranked the world’s third most powerful air force, retaining its position ahead of China for the fifth consecutive year, according to the latest World Air Power Rankings 2026. The ranking reflects the IAF’s operational capabilities, fleet strength and strategic reach despite ongoing challenges in expanding its fighter aircraft fleet.
The report places the United States Air Force at the top, followed by Russia, with India securing third place ahead of China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Defence analysts say the ranking underlines India’s strong air combat capability, backed by modern aircraft, trained personnel and growing indigenous defence programmes.
The IAF currently operates a mix of fighter jets, transport aircraft, helicopters and surveillance platforms. Frontline aircraft such as the Rafale, Su-30MKI, Mirage 2000 and the indigenous LCA Tejas have significantly strengthened India’s operational readiness. The force has also enhanced its capabilities through advanced air defence systems, network-centric warfare and precision strike technologies.
However, the report also highlights key challenges. The IAF continues to operate with fewer fighter squadrons than its sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons, affecting its long-term force structure. Several ageing aircraft are being phased out, while the induction of new fighters is progressing gradually.
Defence experts believe that upcoming acquisitions, including additional Tejas aircraft and future fifth-generation fighter programmes, will be crucial in maintaining India’s air superiority. Increased focus on indigenous manufacturing under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative is also expected to strengthen the country’s defence preparedness.
