The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold its 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai on September 18, with several important decisions lined up for Indian cricket. From the future composition of the IPL Governing Council to India’s representation at the International Cricket Council (ICC), the meeting has a wide-ranging agenda.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has informed the board’s 38 state associations about the meeting. The AGM will be held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai and is scheduled to begin at 11.30 am.
One of the more significant proposals concerns the Cricket Association of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The BCCI will consider granting the association associate membership, which would bring cricket in the Union Territory formally into the board’s wider structure.
The proposal has already been discussed by the BCCI Apex Council and will now go before the General Body for a decision. If approved, Andaman and Nicobar would gain a clearer pathway towards participating in the BCCI’s domestic cricket system. However, associate membership does not come with voting rights in the board.
Andaman islands has often faced the practical difficulties that come with its geographical distance from mainland India. Greater BCCI involvement could bring more organised matches, coaching and development opportunities closer to local players.
The move is not expected to mean that an Andaman and Nicobar team will immediately enter tournaments such as the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy or Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Instead, the focus is likely to be on strengthening the local cricket structure first and gradually developing players before considering entry into the BCCI’s major domestic competitions.
At present, 38 teams compete in BCCI-approved domestic tournaments. The proposed associate membership would therefore be an initial step rather than an immediate addition to that number.
The IPL will take up another major portion of the AGM agenda. The board will elect two General Body representatives to the IPL Governing Council, with one of the positions involving the chairmanship of the council. Arun Dhumal is currently the IPL chairman.
BCCI electoral officer A K Joti has already issued the election notice. Member associations have until August 31 to submit nominations, while the list of valid candidates is expected on September 11. The elections are currently expected to be uncontested.
The meeting will also see the induction of a representative from the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA) into the IPL Governing Council. The move gives the players’ body a formal presence in an administrative structure that deals with several important aspects of the Indian Premier League.
Another closely watched item is India’s representation at the ICC. The BCCI’s AGM agenda includes the appointment of its representative or representatives to the International Cricket Council and similar international organisations.
This could be important because the BCCI remains the most financially powerful cricket board in the world and has considerable influence over international cricket. The person chosen to represent India at the ICC will therefore be watched closely within the global cricketing community.
The AGM is not only about elections and high-profile appointments. Several routine administrative matters will also require approval.
The board will consider its audited accounts for 2025-26, the Treasurer’s Report and the annual budget for 2026-27. Members will also consider the appointment of auditors for the new financial year. The appointment of the BCCI Ombudsman and Ethics Officer is also on the agenda.
The board is also expected to consider appointments to various standing committees, cricket committees and the umpire committee. The AGM agenda includes reports from the BCCI’s Apex Council, CEO, Governing Council, Ombudsman and Ethics Officer.
Another expected decision concerns the junior selection committee. The BCCI recently invited applications for five positions on the panel, with the selection process involving screening, shortlisting and interviews. The AGM is expected to ratify the appointments once the process is completed.
There has also been speculation about the future of Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of India’s senior men’s selection committee. Reports have suggested that changes could be made to the selection panel, but no final decision on Agarkar’s position has been officially announced. That makes any development around the senior selection committee something to watch when the BCCI’s wider administrative decisions are taken.
The September 18 meeting is therefore likely to be more than a routine annual gathering. It brings together decisions involving IPL administration, ICC representation, domestic cricket, player representation and BCCI governance.
