Six people, including five women, were killed and around 20 others injured after a private travel bus crashed into a container truck on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway in Telangana’s Suryapet district early Wednesday morning. The impact was severe, leaving the front portion of the bus crushed and several passengers trapped inside.
The Suryapet road accident took place near Dorakunta village on the outskirts of Kodad mandal, on NH-65. Police said the crash occurred in the early hours, with reports putting the time between about 4.30 am and 5.15 am. The bus was travelling from Hyderabad towards Vijayawada and Eluru in Andhra Pradesh when it hit the truck from behind.
The private bus was carrying about 42 passengers, according to police and preliminary reports. One later police account put the number at 43. The bus was on its way towards Andhra Pradesh when it collided with the heavy vehicle. The force of the bus-truck collision caused extensive damage to the front section, where several passengers were seated.
Six passengers died at the scene. The deceased included five women and one man. Police had not immediately released the identities of all the victims. At least 20 passengers suffered injuries, with several described as serious. Hindustan Times reported that four injured people were in critical condition and 11 had suffered severe injuries. Other early reports put the number of injured at 12, reflecting the fact that authorities were still assessing casualties when the first reports emerged.
The crash left the bus badly mangled and made the rescue operation difficult. Local residents were among the first to alert the police. Emergency teams and police personnel quickly reached the spot and began pulling injured passengers from the wreckage. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, including the Kodad government and area hospitals. Some of the more seriously injured passengers were shifted to hospitals in Vijayawada for advanced treatment.
There are also differing preliminary accounts about the truck involved in the Telangana bus accident. Police said the vehicle was stationary when the bus struck it, while another police account described it as a moving truck. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding its position on the highway before the collision.
A preliminary investigation has suggested that the truck may have hit a road divider shortly before the crash. Police are also examining whether overspeeding or driver negligence contributed to the accident. Hindustan Times reported that officials were checking whether the bus was travelling at high speed when it struck the container vehicle. However, authorities have not yet established the exact cause, and the investigation remains underway.
A significant detail emerging from the investigation concerns the truck’s load. According to Suryapet Superintendent of Police K Narasimha, the truck was carrying heavy industrial pillars. When the bus hit the truck, the chain securing those pillars reportedly snapped, causing the load to strike the right side of the bus. Police said this contributed to the deaths of passengers seated towards the front.
The accident also disrupted traffic on the busy Hyderabad-Vijayawada route as police and rescue workers cleared the damaged vehicles and attended to the victims. A case has been registered, and investigators are examining the vehicles and circumstances of the crash as part of the probe.
This road accident in Suryapet has once again drawn attention to safety on major highways, particularly where passenger buses and heavy commercial vehicles share busy stretches of road during the night and early morning hours. Questions over speeding, driver alertness, heavy-vehicle safety and the proper positioning of vehicles on highways are likely to remain part of the investigation.
The tragedy prompted reactions from political leaders as well. BRS working president KT Rama Rao expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged the government to ensure proper treatment for those injured. Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao called for financial assistance for the families of those killed and stressed the need to strengthen road safety measures across the state.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed shock and grief over the deaths. He conveyed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and directed Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju to ensure that the injured receive the best possible medical treatment. Officials were also asked to monitor their condition and provide the necessary medical support.
