OnePlus has launched its latest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 16, in China, bringing major upgrades to battery capacity, processing power, display technology and cameras. The launch comes as fresh leaks reveal the expected specifications of the OnePlus 16R, which could offer high-end features to Indian buyers at a more accessible price.
The OnePlus 16 succeeds the OnePlus 15 and focuses on performance, gaming and battery life. However, the company has not confirmed its launch in India, and reports suggest the flagship will not be available in the US or Europe. This makes the upcoming OnePlus 16R particularly relevant for Indian consumers looking for a powerful smartphone.
One of the biggest highlights of the OnePlus 16 is its 9,000mAh silicon-carbon battery. The technology allows manufacturers to pack more energy into a battery without increasing its size as much as conventional battery designs might require. The large capacity could benefit users who spend long hours gaming, streaming videos, navigating or multitasking on their phones.
The battery supports 100W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging. These features are designed to reduce charging time, although actual performance will depend on usage and charging conditions. The combination of a large battery and fast charging positions the device as an option for users who prioritise endurance alongside performance.
The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, built for demanding applications and high-performance mobile computing. It offers up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, allowing users to run multiple applications, store large media files and play graphics-intensive games.
The display is another major upgrade. The OnePlus 16 features an OLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 185Hz in supported gaming scenarios, while the system-wide refresh rate can reach 165Hz. A higher refresh rate allows the screen to update more frequently, making animations and fast-moving visuals appear smoother. The benefits will be most noticeable in compatible games and applications.
Photography also receives attention, with a 200-megapixel primary rear camera accompanied by 50-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto cameras. The setup is intended to provide greater flexibility for everyday photography, landscapes, portraits and zoomed-in shots. The main sensor is also designed to improve image capture in challenging lighting conditions.
The phone features a distinctive silver finish with LED lighting arranged around the number 16 and a pattern inspired by galactic coordinates. The lighting can provide visual alerts for notifications and incoming calls, adding a design feature beyond the conventional rear camera module.
In China, the OnePlus 16 starts at 5,699 yuan for the introductory configuration, with regular pricing and higher-storage variants costing more. The company has not announced Indian pricing or international availability, so prospective buyers will have to wait for clarity on whether the flagship will reach other markets.
Meanwhile, attention is shifting to the OnePlus 16R, which is tipped to launch in India in late December or January 2027. According to leaks attributed to tipster Yogesh Brar, the smartphone could use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. If accurate, this would give the device substantial processing power for gaming, multitasking and AI-enabled applications.
The OnePlus 16R is also tipped to feature three 50-megapixel rear cameras, including a telephoto lens. This could mark an important improvement over the OnePlus 15R, which lacked a dedicated telephoto camera. Such a lens can help users capture distant subjects and portraits with greater flexibility than digital zoom alone.
Other reported specifications include a display with a refresh rate of up to 165Hz and a battery larger than 7,500mAh. The final battery capacity, camera performance and other specifications remain unconfirmed. The phone is expected to target buyers seeking flagship-level performance without necessarily paying for the premium OnePlus 16.
Reports also suggest that a related device is being tested under Realme branding. However, neither the product identity nor its availability has been officially confirmed.
The OnePlus 16 launch and the emerging 16R leaks point to a continued focus on battery endurance, high-performance chipsets and fast displays. While the flagship showcases the brand’s latest hardware in China, the 16R could be the more significant release for Indian consumers. Its eventual price, confirmed specifications and launch date will determine how strongly it competes in India’s premium mid-range smartphone segment.
