The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite on Friday, marking another important step in India’s efforts to strengthen its satellite-based imaging capabilities.
The satellite was carried into space by the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F17), which lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, at 2.55 am. The launch followed a countdown of about 27.5 hours and was closely watched as one of ISRO’s important missions this year.
The 51.7-metre-tall GSLV carried the 2,367-kg EOS-05 satellite. About 18 minutes after liftoff, the spacecraft separated from the rocket and was placed into its planned sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. It will subsequently use its onboard propulsion system to reach its operational geosynchronous orbit.
The successful launch gives India a new capability in Earth observation. EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, has been designed to provide frequent imaging of the Indian region from a geosynchronous orbit.
This is particularly useful because the satellite can maintain a sustained view of a large area instead of simply passing over it at intervals. Such a capability can provide timely information for applications where changes on the ground need to be monitored continuously or at short intervals.
