Social media influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj was detained in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr on Friday in connection with an alleged assault during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, bringing fresh movement to a case that had triggered growing political and public pressure.
Bhardwaj was traced to Bulandshahr after Delhi Police came under renewed pressure to act against him. His detention came hours after members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), accompanied by opposition leaders, protested outside the Parliament Street police station demanding his arrest.
The case centres on an alleged attack on Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Azad, during a CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. An FIR had already been registered in connection with the incident, but protesters argued that the original charges did not adequately reflect the seriousness of the alleged assault.
The controversy returned to the spotlight after a podcast featuring Bhardwaj circulated widely on social media.
In the clip, Bhardwaj appeared to boast about attacking Kumar, claiming that he had “cracked” his skull and that the man had received around 60 stitches. He also suggested that political connections had helped him avoid jail.
Those claims triggered a fresh wave of demands for his arrest and raised questions over whether political influence had played a role in the earlier handling of the case.
Bhardwaj has since disputed the interpretation of the viral clip. He has claimed that he acted in self-defence after being surrounded by a group of people and denied receiving political protection. He has also alleged that the circulated clip was manipulated or fake and said he had video evidence to support his version of events.
Delhi Police has rejected allegations of political interference.
The police action followed a protest by CJP leaders and supporters outside the Parliament Street police station on Friday. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das and co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka were among those who demanded stronger action. Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad and other political figures also joined the delegation.
The protesters sought an attempt-to-murder charge, besides invoking provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. They argued that the alleged assault targeted a member of a Dalit family and that the original charges were inadequate.
Following discussions with the delegation, Delhi Police added relevant provisions of the SC/ST Act to the case. Police also said an attempt-to-murder charge would be considered after obtaining further medical opinion. The viral podcast is expected to form part of the investigation as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
The police have said the medical record available in the case noted two lacerated wounds on Kumar’s head. The CJP, however, has maintained that the assault was far more serious and has continued to press for stronger charges.
The dispute has now acquired another political layer after Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan filed a complaint against Bhardwaj.
Paswan said the influencer had allegedly misused his name and those of other politicians while discussing the Jantar Mantar incident. He rejected suggestions that he personally knew Bhardwaj or that the influencer had political backing through him.
Paswan also criticised what he described as the public boasting about violence, saying that allowing such claims to go without action could set a damaging precedent. He called for a fair investigation and said he stood with Nishu Azad and her family.
The LJP’s complaint is significant because Bhardwaj had reportedly referred to Paswan and BJP leader Kapil Mishra while speaking about the incident. His remarks were interpreted as suggesting that political connections had helped him escape arrest.
The allegations have been denied, and the police have also rejected claims of political intervention.
The case has its roots in a CJP protest over alleged examination paper leaks. During the demonstration, a confrontation broke out and Kumar sustained head injuries. The initial FIR named Bhardwaj and another person, Suraj Kumar, as accused and invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint.
The subsequent circulation of Bhardwaj’s podcast remarks changed the nature of the controversy. What had initially been a dispute over a protest confrontation became a wider debate over violence at political demonstrations, social media influence and alleged political protection.
The CJP has argued that the case demonstrates the need for greater accountability when violence occurs during public protests. Its leaders have warned of further demonstrations if stronger action is not taken.
The addition of SC/ST Act provisions and the reported consideration of an attempt-to-murder charge could now significantly change the legal trajectory of the case. A separate complaint concerning alleged online threats involving the protester’s family has also brought additional scrutiny to the matter.
The detention marks a sharp turn from his earlier public claims that he had avoided jail despite the alleged assault. For the police, the next stage will be to establish what happened during the Jantar Mantar confrontation, assess the medical evidence and examine whether Bhardwaj’s statements on the podcast accurately describe the incident.
The case has now moved well beyond a single confrontation at a protest. It has become a test of how allegations of political violence, social media claims and questions of influence are handled by the criminal justice system.
With Bhardwaj detained and additional legal provisions being examined, attention will now turn to the investigation and the evidence that emerges in the days ahead.
