7.4 Magnitude Quake Hits Southern Philippines, Kills Two

Hospitals and schools were evacuated and power outages and communication disruptions were reported

A strong undersea earthquake rocked the southern Philippines early today, October 10, causing widespread alarm, damage, and at least two fatalities. The quake, revised to a magnitude of 7.4 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), struck near the town of Manay in Davao Oriental at a shallow depth of about 25 kilometers around 4:14 a.m. local time. The U.S. Geological Survey reported similar data. The tremor was felt across much of Mindanao Island, shaking homes and buildings.

In response, Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning for eastern and southern coastal provinces, urging residents to evacuate to higher ground immediately. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center extended alerts to nearby countries, including parts of Indonesia and Palau, warning of potential waves reaching up to one meter. Communities in Davao Oriental, Surigao del Sur, and surrounding areas quickly evacuated schools, hospitals, and homes. Fortunately, only minor tsunami waves under half a meter were observed, and no significant surges occurred. The warning was lifted by mid-morning, assuring residents it was safe to return.

Tragically, two deaths were confirmed, one caused by a collapsed structure and another from falling debris. Numerous buildings, including schools, homes, and hospitals, suffered cracks and minor damage. In Mati City, approximately 250 patients were evacuated from a hospital showing signs of structural stress. Power outages and communication disruptions were reported across eastern Mindanao, complicating response efforts. Classes were suspended, also several roads were temporarily closed as authorities assessed structural safety. Search and rescue teams and emergency responders were deployed to the worst-hit areas.

Situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the Philippines regularly faces seismic hazards. This earthquake follows a deadly magnitude 6.9 quake in Cebu just weeks ago. Authorities continue monitoring the situation closely and advise the public to follow official safety instructions.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. pledged swift government action to aid affected communities, emphasizing coordination with local officials. He also warned residents to remain alert for aftershocks, several of which were already recorded by Friday afternoon.
