From the iconic jailor of Sholay to decades of laughter, Asrani’s legacy will live on forever

Bollywood is in mourning after the passing of Govardhan “Asrani” Asrani on October 20, 2025, at the age of 84. Known for his infectious humor and impeccable comic timing, Asrani shared a heartfelt Diwali greeting with fans just hours before his death, a final touch of the warmth he brought to millions.

Born in Jaipur in 1941, Asrani overcame humble beginnings, working as a voice artist at night while studying by day. With encouragement from Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he broke into films, eventually carving a place in the hearts of audiences across generations.

While he appeared in over 350 films, Asrani is best remembered as the quirky jailor in the 70’s super hit movie Sholay, delivering lines that remain etched in Bollywood history. His timing and expressions made him one of the most beloved figures in Indian cinema, spreading laughter and joy in films like Chupke Chupke, Bawarchi, and Abhimaan.

Even in his final days, he remained active, with actor Akshay Kumar recalling their recent collaboration on an upcoming project. Tributes poured in from fans, colleagues, and admirers, celebrating not just his talent but his kindness and generosity.

Asrani’s family described his passing as “an irreparable loss.” His final rites were held privately at Mumbai’s Santacruz Crematorium. Though he is no longer with us, the laughter of the iconic Sholay jailor will continue to echo in the hearts of fans for generations.
