India’s voice on climate action will be led from the heart of the Amazon this year, as Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav heads to Brazil for the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP-30) in Belém from 11 to 20 November. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the summit.
According to sources, India will be represented at the Leaders’ Summit on 6 and 7 November by Dinesh Bhatia, the Indian ambassador to Brazil. Amandeep Garg, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, will serve as India’s chief negotiator during the talks.
Both Modi and Yadav had skipped last year’s COP-29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, as its dates clashed with the Maharashtra elections. That conference, focused on climate finance, saw Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh lead the delegation and deliver India’s national statement.
This year’s COP-30 will assess global progress on the Paris Agreement and explore ways to strengthen commitments on finance, renewable energy, and climate resilience.
