Russia signals support for India as Putin plans visit

Russia backs India’s UNSC bid. Strategic, trade, and technology ties to deepen during the December visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit New Delhi in December, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed, according to news agency ANI. Lavrov described India-Russia relations as a “particularly privileged strategic partnership,” highlighting the strong and enduring ties between the two nations.

He assured that India remains free to chart its own trade policies, even amid US sanctions, signaling Moscow’s respect for India’s independent role in global affairs. Lavrov also reiterated Russia’s support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, underlining India’s growing influence on the world stage.

The visit is expected to boost cooperation in key areas including defence, technology, energy, finance, humanitarian issues, and artificial intelligence. Analysts see the trip as more than ceremonial, it is an opportunity for India to expand its strategic and economic gains while strengthening its international partnerships.
