Trump backs 500% tariffs on Russian oil buyers

India and China named in the US bill targeting countries that continue energy trade with Moscow

US President Donald Trump has said he supports a new Senate plan to impose very high tariffs — up to 500% — on countries that continue buying oil or gas from Russia. The bill mentions India and China, which are among Russia’s biggest energy customers.

The proposal aims to reduce Russia’s income from oil sales, which the US says helps fund the war in Ukraine. Trump said that they must act “very tough” against any nation still trading energy with Moscow.

India has said it needs affordable oil for its energy security and has already shared its concerns with US leaders. China has not issued a detailed response yet.

Russia criticised Trump’s comments, calling the proposed tariffs “illegal” and saying the US has no right to interfere in other nations’ trade choices.

If approved, the plan could raise tensions between the U.S. and major Asian countries and disrupt global oil trade.
