Curfew in Nepal after Gen‑Z protests turn violent

Youth clashes with former PM Oli’s party lead authorities to ban gatherings and impose curfew in Bara district

Nepal’s Bara district saw fresh clashes between young Gen‑Z protesters and supporters of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s party, prompting authorities to impose a curfew.

The unrest occurred in Simara, near the airport, where demonstrators and party members faced off. Security forces stepped in to prevent escalation, and officials have banned all public gatherings in the area.

The curfew will remain in effect until 8 pm on Thursday. Police reported no serious injuries during the clashes.

These protests are linked to earlier youth demonstrations sparked by anger over political corruption and restrictions on social media. The unrest comes as Nepal prepares for general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki appealed for calm, urging all parties to avoid political provocations. She also emphasized that security forces should act cautiously to ensure a safe environment ahead of the elections.
