Tamil Nadu is seeing fast-moving political developments after actor-turned-politician Vijay began efforts to form the next government following a hung Assembly verdict. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member House, falling just short of the 118 needed for a majority.
In a key move, Vijay has reached out to the Congress for support. The development was confirmed by Congress leader K.C. Venugopal, who said the party has been approached to back TVK in forming the government. This puts Congress in a crucial position, as its support could help Vijay cross the majority mark.
Since the results, Vijay has been holding a series of meetings with his party leaders to plan the way forward. The main focus is now on building alliances quickly. Apart from Congress, TVK is also looking at support from smaller parties and independent MLAs to strengthen its numbers.
The election outcome has changed the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, weakening the hold of traditional parties like the DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s strong performance in his first major election has opened up new possibilities, but it has also made government formation more complex.
There are a few options on the table. TVK could form a coalition government with Congress and other allies, or try to run a minority government with outside support. However, time is limited, and a clear majority will be important for stability.
The Congress has not yet taken a final call. Party leaders have indicated that discussions are ongoing and a decision will be made after internal consultations. Their support could be the deciding factor in who forms the next government.
