Police have intensified action following violence during protests in Kolkata’s Park Circus area, with more than 40 people arrested so far in connection with the incident. Authorities are continuing their investigation while security has been increased in the area to prevent further unrest.
The clashes reportedly broke out during protests against restrictions on roadside namaz and the alleged targeting of Muslim-majority localities during anti-encroachment drives. As tensions grew, the situation escalated into confrontations between protesters and police personnel.
Stone-pelting and violence were reported during the unrest, leaving several police officials injured and causing damage to vehicles and public property. Security forces were later deployed in the area to bring the situation under control and prevent any further escalation.
The incident quickly drew political attention, with the Chief Minister strongly condemning the violence and warning that strict action would be taken against those responsible. Authorities said attacks on police personnel and damage to public property would not be tolerated and those involved would face legal action.
Following the clashes, police stepped up deployment in sensitive areas and carried out additional security measures to maintain law and order. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage and gathering evidence to identify people believed to have played a role in the incident.
Officials said more arrests could follow as the investigation continues. Police teams are working to establish the sequence of events and determine who was involved in the violence.
