The Congress leadership has delayed announcing Kerala’s next Chief Minister, keeping political suspense alive even after the United Democratic Front’s strong victory in the Assembly elections.
Soon after the results, newly elected UDF MLAs passed a resolution authorising Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to take the final call on the Chief Ministerial candidate. The move has effectively shifted the decision to the party’s central leadership in Delhi.
Within the Congress-led alliance, senior leader and Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan has emerged as the frontrunner for the post, with most UDF allies reportedly backing his name. However, the Congress high command is also consulting senior state leaders before making the final announcement.
The delay has triggered intense discussions within Kerala’s political circles, with supporters of different leaders lobbying for representation in the new government. Apart from selecting the Chief Minister, the party leadership is also working on balancing caste, regional, and community representation in the Cabinet.
Congress leaders said the party wants to avoid internal divisions and ensure a smooth transition as it prepares to return to power in Kerala after years in Opposition. The high command is expected to finalise the decision after consultations with alliance partners and senior party observers.
The UDF’s victory marked a major political comeback for the Congress-led alliance, which defeated the ruling Left Democratic Front in a closely watched election. The result has revived the Congress party’s position in Kerala at a time when it is seeking to strengthen its presence nationally.
Political observers say the leadership decision will be crucial for the party’s future strategy in the state, especially with expectations high among workers and alliance partners after the election victory.
An official announcement on the next Chief Minister is expected soon after the Congress leadership completes internal consultations in Delhi.
