Delhi Cabinet clears electric vehicle policy

New policy promotes electric vehicles, charging stations and cleaner public transport across Delhi

The Delhi government has approved a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy aimed at accelerating the shift towards clean mobility and making the Capital a zero-emission transport hub by 2030. Cleared by the Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday, the policy focuses on increasing the adoption of electric vehicles, expanding charging infrastructure and reducing air pollution.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the policy is designed to make electric mobility more affordable and accessible while encouraging people to gradually move away from petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. The government believes the initiative will play a key role in improving Delhi’s air quality and creating a cleaner urban transport system.

A major highlight of the policy is its target to significantly increase the share of electric vehicles in new registrations over the next few years. The government also plans to strengthen the network of public charging stations and battery-swapping facilities to address concerns about charging accessibility.

The policy offers incentives for buyers of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars and commercial vehicles. It also encourages businesses and fleet operators to adopt EVs by providing financial support and policy benefits. Officials said these measures are expected to reduce the overall cost of owning electric vehicles and boost their adoption.

Public transport is another major focus area. The government plans to expand the electric bus fleet and promote the gradual transition of public transport and commercial vehicles to cleaner alternatives. Dedicated efforts will also be made to electrify delivery vehicles and other last-mile transport services operating in the city.

Besides reducing pollution, the initiative is expected to generate employment in EV manufacturing, charging infrastructure and maintenance services. Officials said the policy has been prepared after consultations with industry experts and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition towards electric mobility.
