Delhi HC designates 85 senior advocates

Eleven women among lawyers elevated in one of court's largest designation exercises

The Delhi High Court has designated 85 lawyers as Senior Advocates, marking one of the largest rounds of elevations in the court’s history. The decision recognises the lawyers’ professional excellence, experience and contribution to the legal profession.

The full court approved the designations after completing the selection process under the guidelines governing the conferment of senior advocate status. Among those elevated are 11 women, reflecting a growing representation of women in the higher ranks of the legal profession.

The designation of Senior Advocate is considered one of the highest professional honours for practising lawyers in India. It is awarded to advocates who have demonstrated exceptional legal knowledge, courtroom advocacy and ethical standards over the course of their careers.

Lawyers conferred with the designation are recognised for their expertise in handling complex legal matters before constitutional courts and tribunals. While Senior Advocates enjoy greater professional recognition, they are also required to follow specific rules under the Bar Council of India, including restrictions on directly accepting briefs from clients.

The latest list includes advocates with extensive experience across constitutional law, commercial disputes, taxation, criminal law, arbitration and public interest litigation. Many have appeared in several high-profile cases before the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court over the years.

The move has been welcomed by members of the legal fraternity, who described it as recognition of years of dedicated legal practice. Several newly designated Senior Advocates expressed gratitude to the court and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the highest professional standards.

The designation process involved an assessment of the candidates’ legal expertise, integrity, standing at the Bar and overall contribution to the justice system. The final decision was taken by the Full Court after considering recommendations made during the evaluation process.
