National Doctors’ Day is being celebrated across India on July 1, with people expressing gratitude to doctors for their dedication, compassion and tireless service in protecting lives and improving public health.
The day commemorates the birth and death anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, one of India’s most respected physicians, educationists and former Chief Minister of West Bengal. Dr Roy, who was awarded the Bharat Ratna, is remembered for his immense contribution to healthcare and medical education in the country.
This year’s observance highlights the importance of recognising the efforts of doctors who continue to serve patients under challenging conditions. Hospitals, medical institutions and healthcare organisations across the country are organising awareness programmes, health camps, seminars and felicitation events to honour medical professionals.
The 2026 theme, “Behind the Mask: Caring Beyond the Diagnosis,” focuses on the human side of medicine. It recognises that doctors not only treat illnesses but also provide emotional support, comfort and reassurance to patients and their families during difficult times. The theme also highlights the empathy, resilience and commitment shown by healthcare workers every day.
The President, Prime Minister, Union Ministers and several State leaders extended greetings to the medical fraternity, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to society. Many praised doctors for their role in strengthening India’s healthcare system and responding to public health emergencies with professionalism and dedication.
The occasion also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by doctors, including long working hours, increasing workload and the need for better healthcare infrastructure and workplace safety. Medical associations have used the day to call for stronger support systems and greater respect for healthcare professionals.
For patients and families, Doctors’ Day is an opportunity to thank those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to save lives, ease suffering and improve health outcomes. Many hospitals encouraged citizens to spread awareness about preventive healthcare, regular check-ups and healthy lifestyles.
