FIFA lifts Folarin Balogun ban ahead of Belgium clash

Trump's reported intervention sparks debate over FIFA's controversial disciplinary decision before knockout match

FIFA has overturned the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun, clearing him to play in the team’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium. The decision has triggered widespread debate, with critics questioning the timing and circumstances behind the reversal.

Balogun was shown a straight red card during the United States’ previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Under FIFA rules, the dismissal carried an automatic one-match suspension, which would have ruled him out of the crucial knockout fixture.

However, FIFA later announced that the suspension had been lifted and converted into a one-year probationary sanction, allowing the striker to remain available for selection. The governing body said the decision was taken under provisions in its disciplinary code that permit sanctions to be suspended in exceptional cases.

The move gained further attention after reports claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump personally urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the red card. Trump later publicly welcomed the decision, describing it as the right outcome. FIFA has not confirmed whether the reported conversation influenced its ruling.

The reversal has drawn criticism from Belgium, the United States’ next opponents. Belgian officials questioned the fairness of changing a disciplinary decision ahead of a major knockout match, arguing that such moves could affect confidence in FIFA’s disciplinary process.

Balogun has been one of the United States’ standout performers during the tournament, scoring key goals and playing an important role in the team’s progress to the Round of 16. His return is expected to strengthen the American attack as they look to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The controversy has reignited discussions over transparency and consistency in football governance, with many observers calling for greater clarity on how disciplinary decisions are reviewed.
