Google brings new age checks to Android apps

New tools help developers create safer, age-appropriate experiences while protecting user privacy.

Google is expanding its age-assurance technology for Android apps, giving developers a new way to understand whether users are children or adults without requiring them to directly collect sensitive personal information. The company said its Play Age Signals API will become available worldwide by the end of 2026, marking a major step in its efforts to improve child safety across the Android ecosystem.

The rollout comes as governments and regulators in several countries push technology companies to strengthen age verification and protect children from inappropriate online content. Google’s latest move is aimed at helping app developers respond to these requirements while making it easier to provide different experiences based on a user’s age.

The Play Age Signals API is already available in Brazil. Google plans to expand it to Australia and Canada by mid-August before making it available across all markets by the end of the year. The technology allows participating Android apps to receive an age-related signal that can help them determine whether a user belongs to a particular age group.

Instead of requiring developers to collect a user’s exact date of birth, the system is designed to provide age-range information. This means an app can receive information that helps it identify whether a user is younger or older without necessarily being given the person’s full birth date.

For parents, the system is connected to Google’s existing Family Link parental controls. Parents can provide their child’s age range through Google’s controls, and that information can then be made available to participating apps that support the feature. Google said age-range information is not shared automatically. Parents have to opt in before the information can be used.

The approach is intended to make age-based controls less complicated for families. Rather than having to provide the same information separately to every app, parents can manage the relevant setting through Google’s centralised parental-control system.

Adults can also share their age when prompted by participating apps. This could allow developers to offer different features or content depending on whether someone is an adult or a minor.

For app developers, the technology could become increasingly important as age verification rules spread across different markets. Developers can use the age signals to create age-appropriate experiences, limit access to certain features or content, and meet regulatory requirements where applicable.

Google’s official developer documentation says the Play Age Signals API is currently in beta. Developers must request access, obtain the available age signal and use the information in accordance with Google’s terms and applicable laws. They remain responsible for ensuring their apps comply with local regulations and Google Play policies.

Importantly, Google places restrictions on how the information can be used. The company says age signals cannot be used for advertising, marketing, user profiling or analytics. The information is intended specifically for providing age-appropriate content and experiences and for meeting legal requirements.

Google also says the Play Age Signals client library itself does not collect user data. The API operates through Google Play, with the Play Store handling the relevant processes. This privacy-focused design is intended to reduce the amount of sensitive information that developers need to collect directly.

The move also highlights the growing competition between Google and Apple over age-assurance technology. Apple introduced its own age-verification tools globally earlier this year as governments introduced new requirements for online child safety. Google’s expansion brings Android closer to that model, giving developers a platform-level method for responding to users’ age information.

Google already offers several parental-control features through Google Play and Family Link. Parents can approve app downloads, manage screen-time limits and apply content restrictions. Developers can also use existing Google Play controls to restrict whether children can discover particular apps. The new age signals add another layer by allowing apps themselves to adjust their experience based on age.

The change is significant because age verification is becoming an increasingly common part of the digital experience. Platforms are under pressure to prevent children from accessing unsuitable content, while users and privacy advocates remain concerned about the amount of personal information that could be collected in the process.

Google’s approach attempts to find a middle ground: give apps enough information to make age-appropriate decisions without routinely handing over a user’s exact date of birth.

For millions of Android users, the change may not be immediately visible. Instead, its impact will depend largely on how developers choose to integrate the Play Age Signals API into their apps. Over time, however, users could see more age-specific settings, restrictions and experiences across Google Play applications.

With the global rollout scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, age assurance is set to become a more familiar part of the Android ecosystem. For Google, the challenge will be to improve child safety without turning age verification into another source of unnecessary data collection. For developers and parents, the new tools could offer a simpler way to make digital experiences safer and more appropriate for younger users.
