Hamas has announced the dissolution of its administrative government in Gaza, a significant political move that comes as efforts to secure a ceasefire and end the ongoing conflict with Israel continue. The decision is being viewed as part of broader discussions over how Gaza could be governed once the war comes to an end.
The Hamas-run Government Media Office said the existing administration would step aside to make way for a non-partisan committee of technocrats expected to oversee the territory during a transitional period. The proposed body would focus on restoring essential public services, coordinating humanitarian aid and helping rebuild Gaza after months of devastating fighting.
The announcement follows renewed diplomatic efforts led by regional mediators, including Egypt and Qatar, with support from the United States. Negotiators are continuing discussions aimed at securing a temporary ceasefire, increasing humanitarian assistance and reaching an agreement for the release of hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Hamas said the move reflects its willingness to support a broader Palestinian consensus on Gaza’s future administration. The group has indicated that governance should eventually be handed to an independent authority capable of managing civilian affairs while reconstruction efforts begin.
Israel, however, dismissed the announcement, calling it a political manoeuvre rather than a meaningful change. Israeli officials argued that dissolving the administrative government does not alter Hamas’ influence or military presence in Gaza, insisting that lasting peace requires the group to be fully removed from power.
The war, which began after Hamas launched its October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, has caused widespread destruction across Gaza. Thousands of people have been killed, many more displaced, and much of the enclave’s infrastructure has been severely damaged. International organisations have repeatedly warned of worsening humanitarian conditions, including shortages of food, water and medical supplies.
