Hantavirus Virus outbreak hits cruise ship mid voyage

Passengers fall ill mid-journey and WHO says wider risk remains low

A cruise meant for exploration turned into a health emergency after a suspected hantavirus outbreak on board left three passengers dead and several others unwell. The incident took place on the expedition ship MV Hondius during its journey across the Atlantic.

Health officials say at least one case of hantavirus has been confirmed, while a few others are still being tested. In total, around six people are believed to have fallen ill. Some passengers were quickly moved for medical treatment, and at least one person is reported to be in critical condition.

The situation has drawn attention from the World Health Organization, which is now working with local authorities to understand what happened and to prevent further spread. Medical teams are closely monitoring both passengers and crew as a precaution.

Hantavirus is a rare disease that usually spreads through contact with infected rodents or their droppings. It can cause serious breathing problems and, in severe cases, can be fatal. However, experts say it does not spread easily from person to person, which lowers the risk of a large outbreak.

The ship has been held near Cape Verde while health checks continue. Movement has been restricted in some areas of the vessel as authorities assess the situation and ensure that those on board are safe.

For many passengers, the experience has been frightening, as a routine voyage suddenly turned into a medical crisis. Cruise ships, by nature, are closed environments, which can make it harder to manage such situations quickly.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the WHO has reassured that the risk to the general public remains low. Investigations are ongoing to find out how the virus appeared on the ship in the first place.
