Hardik Pandya has been named in the India A squad for the upcoming home series against Australia A, marking a major step in his return to competitive cricket.
Pandya has been included in the India A one-day squad, but his participation will depend on fitness clearance. The all-rounder has been out of competitive action for around five months because of injury and fitness concerns.
The India A series will be played in Puducherry and will include two multi-day matches and three one-day games. The first multi-day match will begin on September 22, followed by the second from September 29. The three one-day matches are scheduled for October 6, 9 and 11.
Ruturaj Gaikwad will captain the India A one-day team, with Devdutt Padikkal as his deputy. Padikkal will lead the multi-day side, while Sai Sudharsan has been named vice-captain.
Pandya‘s selection is the biggest talking point from the squad announcement. His return to match cricket is being closely watched because India will need him to be fully fit before considering him for a return to the senior team.
The 32-year-old last played during the 2026 Indian Premier League season, where he captained Mumbai Indians. He later missed matches because of back spasms before suffering a quadriceps strain. A further leg injury delayed his comeback.
The India A assignment will give Pandya the chance to test himself in competitive conditions rather than returning directly to international cricket. The focus will be on his ability to handle match workload, particularly his bowling, as he continues his recovery.
Pandya’s all-round ability makes him an important player for India in limited-overs cricket. He can provide runs in the middle order and contribute with the ball, giving the team greater balance. His fitness has therefore remained a key issue whenever India plans its white-ball squads.

Padikkal will have a different challenge as captain of the multi-day team. He will lead a squad featuring players such as Sai Sudharsan, Yash Rathod, Shaikh Rasheed, Kumar Kushagra, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian and Anshul Kamboj.
Sudharsan’s presence in both squads is also notable. The left-handed batter has emerged as one of India’s promising young players and will get an opportunity to play a key role in the Australia A series.
The two multi-day matches will provide opportunities for players looking to strengthen their red-ball credentials, while the one-day series will offer a platform to those competing for limited-overs spots.
The Australia A tour is expected to provide a strong test for the India A players. Matches against Australia A offer competitive exposure to players who may soon be required at international level.
