An Indian sailor died after suffering medical complications aboard an oil tanker near the coast of Oman, authorities and officials confirmed.
The deceased was identified as Nishanth Uirthanathan, a crew member on the tanker MT Celestial. He reportedly developed serious health complications while the vessel was sailing in the Arabian Sea off the Omani coast.
According to reports, fellow crew members sought urgent medical assistance after Nishanth’s condition worsened. Efforts were made to provide medical care onboard and arrange emergency support. However, he succumbed to his illness before further treatment could be provided.
The vessel was operating in waters near Oman when the incident occurred. Maritime authorities and relevant agencies were informed, and procedures were initiated to handle the situation and assist the crew.
Officials said the death was caused by medical complications and was not linked to any accident, security incident or operational issue on the ship. The tanker and its crew remained safe following the incident.
The Indian mission in Oman and maritime authorities are coordinating with the shipping company and the sailor’s family regarding the repatriation of his mortal remains and other necessary formalities.
The death has drawn attention to the health risks and challenges faced by seafarers, who often work for long periods away from shore and may have limited access to advanced medical facilities while at sea.
Further procedures are underway, and authorities are expected to complete the required documentation before the body is brought back to India.
