Instagram removes private chat encryption

The change marks a major shift in Meta’s approach to privacy and online safety on Instagram

Meta has officially switched off end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, bringing an end to one of the platform’s privacy-focused features. The update took effect worldwide on May 8, 2026.

The encryption feature ensured that only people involved in a conversation could read the messages. By removing it, Instagram chats will now be accessible to Meta’s moderation systems if required for safety checks and investigations.

Instagram first launched encrypted chats as an optional feature in 2023 for users seeking additional privacy. The company had earlier spoken about expanding encrypted messaging across its services, but it has now reversed that plan for Instagram.

Meta said the decision was made to improve content moderation and help tackle harmful activity online. The company believes stronger monitoring tools are needed to identify scams, abuse, grooming, and illegal content more effectively.

Users with encrypted chats are being informed through in-app notifications. Instagram has also provided options for users to download old conversations, photos, videos, and shared files connected to encrypted chats before the feature disappears completely.

The move has raised concerns among privacy advocates, who warn that removing encryption may weaken protection for users’ personal communication. Cybersecurity experts say encrypted messaging is widely considered one of the safest ways to communicate online.

At the same time, supporters of stricter moderation argue that social media platforms need stronger oversight tools to address growing online safety risks.

Meta has not announced similar changes for WhatsApp, which continues to offer end-to-end encryption by default.
